Tree Hunters of Java Rengas Salvaged Riverwood Large Charcuterie Chopping Board
We are working on a project in Java with Blackbaron Woods and “the Tree Hunters of Java”.
They source a variety of timbers from only sustainable. , naturally fallen trees, salvaged timbers From the Badui of Java to the Dayak of Borneo they have an innate ingrained understanding of nature.
In many cases the main issue is about extraction and timbers can be salvaged out of rivers, landslides, lightning strike.
These are out of Rengas riverwood whete trees / logs that fell into rivers decades ago. This makes the wood extrenly stable.
I am told Rengas was the favourite wood of general Raffles and it has a deep red heartwood .
Our chopping boards are finished with a mixture of natural tung nut oil mixed with di-liminene to enhance absorption .
Di-liminene is made from orange skins and is a terpene so you may notice am orangey smell .
Both are food grade .
There is a lot of work involved in this project and its an honour to work so directly with “the tree hunters of java” And we can pretty much guarantee no one else in the world produces a Rengas charcuterie board out of salvaged riverwood .
Rengas - Heartwood is a deep red with darker streaks, while the sapwood is a lighter pinkish-brown to almost white. Heartwood will darken in color upon exposure to light and air. Sapwood especially is said to be highly irritating to some individuals. Striped pieces are sometimes called Tiger Rengas.
